This piece was inspired by the historical imagery of the Madonna and Child. My interpretation is based upon the biblical account of Mary being a common girl. My portrayal of Mary defies the Western and European imagery. I portray Mary as a very common looking girl. No glamour, no idealization, in addition she is represented as a common girl of color. The ornateness of the background symbolizes the majestic and divine significane of this common Mary with her son Jesus, the Christ.
