During the Jim Crow era here in America, African Americans were portray in advertising with the demeaning Sambo and Aunt Jamima imagery. They are portraited blacks as simple minded and dumb, with a propensity of ready and willing servitude to their white masters. In this piece, I portray this African American female, not with a black skin tone, but in a multitude of colors. Yet one can still tell that she is black, in order to communicate that we are more than our skin color. And of course the broken chains symbolizes the breaking of the degrading sterotype put upon people of color by this society.
